Friday C-3A Dance

This session was quite challenging with a heavy concentration on concepts:

(1) from parallel 3-and-1 lines with infacing centers and ends as Beaus -- Own The Centers Plan Ahead by Criss Cross The Shadow;

(2) from parallel left-hand two-faced lines -- Own The Trailers, Keep Busy by Vertical 1/2 Tag

 (3) from facing twin diamonds -- Own The Centers, Flip the Diamond by Crossover Circulate

(4) from parallel right-hand two-faced lines -- Own The Leaders, Link Up by Slant Spin The Top

(5) from parallel outfacing lines -- Own The Ends, Plan Ahead by Split Checkmate

(6) from parallel right-hand two-faced lines -- Own The Leaders, Flare Out To A Line by Wheel Thru

(7) from a formation formed from parallel right-hand single-file columns with boys as #1 and #2 and having the boys Quarter Out -- Own The Boys, Wheel The Ocean by Something New

(8) from a formation formed from parallel right-hand single-file columns with girls as #3 and #4 and having the girls Quarter Out and Press Ahead -- Own The Girls, Wheel Around & Roll by Team Up

(9) from parallel right-hand two-faced lines -- Own The Leaders, Wheel The Sea by Wheel Thru & Roll

(10) from parallel ocean waves -- Initially Tandem, 1/4 The Deucey (see Note at the bottom of the page)

(11) from a double pass thru -- Initially Tandem, Catch 2

(12) from parallel ocean waves -- Finally Tandem, Recycle

(13) from parallel 3-and-1 lines with outfacing centers and with ends as either all Beaus or all Belles -- 3 By 1 Cross & Wheel

(14) from a formation formed from parallel ocean waves and having the leaders Quarter Out -- Follow To A Diamond.

Dave also taught an experimental call written by Lee Kopman: Big Time -- from various 2x4 formations with the outsides as ends of lines and with the centers as back-to-back couples -- centers Shakedown and Pass the Ocean; ends Circulate 1 & 1/2.  He also called some variations: "Finish Big Time" and "Big Time But (Anything)" where the "Anything" call replaces Pass The Ocean.

Saturday A-2 Workshop

Dave presented quite a bit of A-2 material:

(1) from parallel ocean-waves -- Motivate but Replace the last Cast Off 3/4 with Slip, Slide & Swing

(2) from facing twin and point-to-point diamonds -- Split Counter Rotate and Fan The Top

(3) from same-hand point-to-point diamonds -- 6 By 2 Acey Deucey

(4) from a left-hand 1/4 tag -- Chain Reaction

(5) from facing twin diamonds -- Crossfire

(6) from parallel 3-and-1 lines with infacing ends and the centers in right-hand mini-waves -- Coordinate.  He cued a few higher-level calls with a high degree of success:

(7) from parallel ocean-waves -- Step & Fold

(8) from parallel ocean-waves -- Cross Your Neighbor

(9) from facing couples -- Wheel Fan Thru

(10) from various formations containing wave-based triangles -- Triangle Circulate

(11) from a 1/4 tag -- Jay Square Thru 3

(12) from a right-hand tidal two-faced line with alternating sexes with girls as the very center two -- Girls Disconnected Swing Thru

(13) from parallel right-hand ocean-waves with same sexes as partner -- Diagonal (same-sex) Boxes Circulate, Walk & Dodge, and Remake.

Dave also taught a call that is currently on a C-4 list but at one time was a Quarterly Selection: Shuttle (Anything) -- from an eight chain thru -- All Pass Thru.  New centers Pass In; new ends take the "Anything" direction or call.  If a direction is specified, the dancers 1/4 turn in the specified direction; otherwise the dancers execute the specified call.  See Note at the bottom of the page.

Saturday A-2 Dance

Dave used some of the calls he covered in the workshop session and included a few other interesting additions:

(1) from a completed double pass thru -- Left Track 2

(2) from outfacing lines -- Left Wheel & Deal

(3) from parallel ocean waves -- Motivate but Replace the last Cast Off 3/4 with Trade The Wave

(4) from offset lines/waves -- various box calls.  He successfully cued additional higher-level calls:

(5) from infacing lines -- Dixie Diamond

(6) from infacing lines -- Beau Hop

(7) from parallel ocean waves -- Percolate

(8) from a tidal wave -- Stretch Linear Cycle

(9) from parallel ocean waves offset by two dancers -- Triple Box Walk & Dodge.  He also taught and used the C-1 concept Interlocked Diamonds.

(10) from parallel left-hand ocean waves -- Tag Back To A Wave (the tendency is to do a Flip Back)

(11) from parallel right-hand ocean waves -- Outroll Circulate 1 & 1/2 & Little

(12) from a formation formed from parallel right-hand ocean waves and having the dancers Outroll Circulate 1 & 1/2 -- Left Swing The Fractions

Sunday C-2 Dance

This dance session was quite interesting and proved difficult for some of the dancers:

(1) from left-hand offset waves with the outermost dancers facing in -- Triple Waves Swap The Wave

(2) from a tidal column with the very centers back-to-back and all the other dancers facing in -- Checkpoint Single Rotate by Pass & Roll

(3) from a formation formed from parallel single-file columns and having the centers Counter Rotate -- Cross Concentric Peel The Top

(4) from a static square -- Heads Start Stretched Box Split Grand Chain 8

(5) from same-hand twin diamonds -- Exchange The Diamond Chain Thru

(6) from parallel right-hand two-faced lines -- Stretch Tag Back To A Wave

(7) from parallel inverted lines with infacing centers -- Step & Squeeze

(8) from a double pass thru -- Magic Double Pass Thru

(9) from parallel left-hand ocean waves -- Stretch Swap The Wave.

Once again, he taught and used Big Time.

Note (added Feb 15, 2005): Robert Harris is a Trailblazers' member, tape group leader and part-time caller.  He sent me an e-mail regarding my Dance Review in the last issue of the newsletter.  Much of the information was "caller talk" and would probably not be of much interest to most of our readers.  However, he wrote several things I think are important to share:

First, he had some comments/questions about some of the information regarding the Dave Lightly October weekend.  The reason this is important is that he caught some mistakes that I made and I think it is important that our readers get accurate information.

Here are his concerns and my responses:

1. (C-3A) "Initially Tandem 1/4 the Deucey" is called from single file columns, but not from waves.
Response: You are correct.  That was my mistake.
2. (A-2) "Shuttle [direction] or [anycall]" is a C-4 call, and can be either a 4 or 8-person call, depending on the final command.  It is called from a single or normal 8 Chain Thru setup, and is defined as: All Pass Thru; Centers Slide Thru, while the Ends 1/4 In the [direction] or take [anycall].  Why did Dave tell you New Centers Pass In?
Response: Dave taught it correctly.  I wrote it down in my notes incorrectly.
3. (C-1) From Infacing Lines: "Concentric 3/4 Tag".  Did you mean "Concentric Vertical 3/4 Tag", or did you really want the call "Concentric 3/4 Tag" from a tidal setup?
Response: That was a typo.  I meant "Concentric Vertical 3/4 Tag".

I would also like to share how Robert ended his e-mail:

"Craig, if more people would take out their checkers and go through your arrticle, they just might improve their dancing.  You give them an entire dance summarized as to the most interesting calls and concepts, and you adequately describe the starting position, so that almost anyone could go through your article in about 1 hour.  More people should appreciate the work you do, and I'm guessing you do not get many accolades from the square dancers. So is the life of being a caller; At least I appreciate it!"
Thank you, Robert, for the corrections and the nice compliment.
