A-2 Workshop | A-2 Dance | C-1 Dance | C-2 Dance | C-3A Dance Bill's C-3A dance was a complete exercise in concepts. Here are the ones calls I was able to remember and write down: from a same-hand "O", Split Phantom Column Drift Apart; from a tidal wave, Initially Twice Step & Fold Coordinate and Initially Concentric Patch the Boys; from a tidal completed double pass thru, Stretched Column Single Polly Wolly; From a double pass thru formation, Split Phantom Columns Cross Concentric Travel Thru; from (C-1) phantom ocean waves with the same sex in mini-waves and the real ends facing in, Own the Boys Bias Circulate By 1/4 the Deucey. (will also work from same sex mini-waves with the real ends facing out); from columns with girls as #1 and #3 dancers, Own the Girls Wind the Bobbin by Square Thru 4 to a Wave; from a 2 by 4 formation where in each box of 4 the girls are facing out as a couple parallel to the short axis and the boys are back-to-back parallel to the short axis, Own the Girls Trade the Deucey by Split Circulate; and from a split phantom completed double pass thru formation with all the real dancers in two 2 by 2 boxes with the phantom boxes to the right and behind each real box, Split Phantom Columns Track 2. The calls that caused the most discussion were, starting from a double pass thru formation, Tandem Stable Pass the Ocean which ends in a trade by, and Stable Tandem Pass the Sea which ends in a tandem single completed double pass thru. One deviously deceptive call that did not involve concepts, was from right-hand ocean waves, Travel Thru. Top | A-2 Workshop | A-2 Dance | C-1 Dance | C-2 Dance | C-3A Dance Bill covered a wide variety of calls: from various columns, Right Roll to a Wave Twice; from a trade by formation, Finish Pass & Roll; from same-hand point-to-point diamonds, 6 by 2 Acey Deucey; from infacing lines, twin diamonds, and point-to-point diamond, Split Counter Rotate; from right-hand ocean waves, Swing Thru 1 & 1/2, 1/4 Thru 1 & 1/2, Remake 1 & 1/3; and from a box of 4 dancers with two diagonally opposite leaders and two diagonally opposite trailers, Scoot & Weave. Bill spent the majority of the workshop teaching Linear (Anything): "Hinge. Leaders Fold. Extend to the 1/2 tag formation, then do the call”. From various lines, Bill taught Linear Scoot Chain Thru, Linear Follow Your Neighbor, Linear Pass & Roll, Linear Walk & Dodge; and from a tidal two-faced line, As Couples Linear Follow Your Neighbor. Top | A-2 Workshop | A-2 Dance | C-1 Dance | C-2 Dance | C-3A Dance Bill had plenty of interesting calls and continued using the Linear (Anything) calls he taught earlier and added Linear Scoot & Weave. Other calls included from a completed double pass thru, formation Checkmate the Column, from two-faced lines, Motivate but Turn the Star 1/4; from a T-bone box of 4 Peel & Trail; from a 2 by 4 formation consisting of back-to-back couples as centers of columns between single file columns of 2 as ends of lines, Crossover Circulate; and from two-faced lines and ocean waves, Ends Do Your Part of Cast a Shadow (which puts them at the ends of new lines). Top | A-2 Workshop | A-2 Dance | C-1 Dance | C-2 Dance | C-3A Dance Bill called from an eight chain thru formation, Pass the Axle but Replace the first Trades with Any Hand Swing the Fractions; from various columns, Concentric Vertical 1/2 Tag; and from various formations he called variations on Little and on Plenty. He also continued working Linear (Anything) utilizing the following calls: Cross Your Neighbor, Stretch Single Wheel, Peel Off, Trail Off, Peel & Trail, Peel the Top, 2/3 Recycle, Tandem Swing Thru, Vertical Tag the Line, Switch to a Diamond Chain Thru. He also taught Right Wing (Anything): From inverted lines of magic columns, right-hand dancers execute the "anything" call normally, the left-hand dancers execute the call as if they had started with a right handhold (by sliding nose-to-nose). He called Right Wing Circulate and Right Wing Tally Ho. Top | A-2 Workshop | A-2 Dance | C-1 Dance | C-2 Dance | C-3A Dance While Bill did not have a lot of unusual calls, he kept the dancers challenged. Some of the more interesting calls were from an eight chain thru formation, Magic Touch ¼; and from ocean waves, Linear Flip Back. He used several calls from formations with 3 by 1 right-hand triangles such as Triple Tandem by One 1/4 Thru. A relatively simple call that caused problems in many square was from an eight chain thru formation, Circle 1/2 to a Wave. Many dancers interpreted this as "Circle Up Four 1/2 & Extend". This resulted in right-hand ocean waves. The correct ending formation was right-hand columns. NOTES: Recently, a caterer has been given a contract to handle the rental of the Woman’s Club of Orange. He is raising the rent substantially and making repairs to the hall. Since he gave us little notice that the floor was being refinished on the Sunday we were to dance, several Trailblazers members did a remarkable job of getting the word out that we would be dancing at Mel’s Dance Center in Westminster. Oddly enough, the attendance was better than normal. In the last issue, I mentioned how much our guests were impressed by the fun they had and the friendliness or our members. The enthusiasm seems to be spreading. Seven of our recent guests are now new Trailblazers members. At the recent Bakersfield Fiesta there
were several newer C-1 dancers from Northern California and Colorado in
attendance at the C-1 hall. Many of them came to the dance with apprehension,
because someone had warned them about how badly they would be received
by Southern California dancers. Since more than half of the C-1 dancers
in the hall were Trailblazers, they were pleasantly surprised. Several
of them went on an on about how helpful and friendly the Trailblazer are.
Thanks to all our members who made the effort to help and dance with the
dancers from outside the area. As a result, we now have new friends
who will help spread our positive reputation.
